Feeding minds, fueling change

Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower teenagers with nutrition education and to support communities facing food insecurity, especially those in low-income areas and food deserts. Through access to nutritious meals and education, we strive to spark meaningful social and political change in the fight for food justice.

Vision Statement

Biting Back envisions a future where nutrition education is universal and accessible to all teenagers, and where healthy food is available and affordable for everyone.

The Problem

  • Around fifty percent of Americans fail basic nutrition quizzes and in 2020 one in three Americans reported that they were not taught about basic nutrition
  • Many of us try to eat healthy through diets, fads, or through small everyday decisions. However, due to the underlying issue that many people don’t have the foundational knowledge about how to eat in a nutritious and balanced way, these efforts often don’t make a difference.
  • Adding onto this problem, many Americans are unable to access healthy and fresh food because of their location or economic status
  • Eating in a balanced and nutritious way is directly linked to one’s lifespan and general health. Food injustice and the lack of access to nutrition are creating an epidemic of health-related issues like heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and more.

How We Fight This

  • We run online and in-person workshops that explain the foundational concepts of nutrition, why it matters, and how to apply this knowledge into your everyday life to eat healthier. To ensure our workshops are engaging and memorable we use games, exercises, demos, lectures, and hands-on cooking activities.

  • Our website also provides information on nutrition and food injustice. Here, we have loads of resources like recipes, recordings of concepts covered in workshops, toolkits, ways to get involved or receive help, and discussion pages for people to share experiences.

  • Our social media page provides quick videos with insights about nutrition concepts and food injustice.

  • In and outside of workshops we also prepare healthy meals that go to people who face food injustice.

What Success Means to Us

  • We want everyone to leave our workshops with a deeper understanding of nutrition and feel able to implement their new knowledge about nutrition into their own life so that they can feel empowered by food

  • By prepping nutritious meals for people who live on food deserts and actively working with people who are facing food insecurity, we hope to provide nourishing food to individuals facing food injustice while also connecting them with larger organizations that can make a more direct and lasting impact in their life.
